Labrador Retrievers have a very interesting history. The Newfoundland and the St. John's Dog are just some of the names used to denote the breed so popular with Canadian fishermen at the end of the 17th century. They made use of that black short-coated dog with excellent retrieving qualities and willingness to please its owner. A great dog tax made it hard for them to keep those gentle hard working dogs. Great Britain became the second motherland of the Labrador. The English did their best to improve the breed. In 1903, the EKC recognized the Labrador Retriever as a separate breed. The AKC did the same 14 years later.

In the 1930s, Labrador Retrievers started to take part in field trials. This activity absorbed many breed owners. Field trials tested the dog's working qualities and allowed breeder and owners to show off their dogs. This resulted in forming numerous field trial clubs in the US.

Due to its outstanding physical qualities, intelligence, even temper, willingness to work hard, etc. the Labrador Retriever is a great hunter, bomb and arson dog. It is used also as a drug detector, search and rescue dog and an obedience competitor. The Labrador Retriever is one of the three preferred breeds when choosing a therapy animal or a guide for the blind (more than a half of all guide dogs used in the US are Labrador Retrievers).
